Researchers at the School of Medicine and Imperial College London are the first to identify the site where the widely used anesthetic drug propofol binds to receptors in the brain to sedate patients during surgery. Think of it as reverse camouflage. In the wild, animals use color and pattern to disguise themselves from predators. But last spring, a team from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts flipped the calculus. They created an avian observatory to prevent human watchers from disturbing animals in their environments.

Among the many principles the late administrator Jim McLeod espoused was the power of a liberal arts education for all. Scholar and academic leader Ruth J. Simmons, PhD, who also embraces that value, will deliver the second annual James E. McLeod Memorial Lecture on Higher Education, “The State of Conscience in University Life Today,” at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in Graham Chapel.

Alumni & Development will host its annual fall festival and barbecue Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Danforth University Center. Tickets, which cover the barbecue and football game, are $5 for students and children ages 6-12 and $15 per adult.
Paula Rabinowitz, professor of English at the University of Minnesota, will give a lecture, “Paperbacks: Pulp Modernism, Demotic Reading and Censorship in Cold War America,” and lead a workshop during her visit to WUSTL Sept. 30–Oct. 1.
